US help for IDPs

The American Government will provide Rs. 200 million worth ambulances, medical equipment and other items to Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry under an agreement signed between the Ministry and the American Embassy yesterday, a Ministry spokesman said.

He said Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry Acting Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilleke and American Acting Ambassador James R. Moore signed the agreement representing Sri Lanka and the US. After signing the agreement, Moore had stated the US Government will work together with the Sri Lankan Government to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to resettle the IDPs in their original homes and to bring back the past prosperity to the Northern Province.

Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva thanked the American Government and people of America for their continuous support. He stated that the items received by Sri Lanka under the agreement will be distributed among 20 hospitals in welfare villages. Priority has been given to Vavuniya and Cheddikulam hospitals. The items have already reached the Colombo harbour.

Acting Public Affairs Officer of the American Embassy Glen Davis, Chief Officer of Defence Corporation Maj. Jose L. Oroozo and Ministry officials were present at the agreement signing ceremony.
