SLRCS to help distribute Indian relief in Vavuniya

The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society is making arrangements to despatch 650 metric tons of relief items sent by the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) for IDPs in Vavuniya.

SLRCS Deputy Director General Suren Peiris said the SLRCS is awaiting documents from India for customer clearance and security checking to take over the relief items received from the IRCS in 27 forty foot containers.

"As soon as we receive the customer clearance documents, we will be able to despatch the relief items to the IDPs in Vavuniya", Peiris told the Daily News.

He said that the distribution of relief items would be done by the SLRCS under the guidance of the relevant authorities of the Government soon after receiving the necessary security clearance.

The relief items include rice, flour, dhal, noodles, chickpeas, tin food, tin fish, cereal, sugar, tea, biscuits, SMA milk powder, baby food, Juice, dry food and medicines. "The value of relief items is over Rs.16.7 million", he added. Peiris noted that the SLRCS with support of the Movement Partners and Partner National Societies had been providing relief items and services for the IDPs that include water, food, ambulance services, sanitary facilities, and admission packs for pregnant women and babies, six mobile health units and services of 400 volunteers to help hospital staff.

"The consignment of relief items is considered as a donation from the Indian Red Cross Society and we have received the government's consent for its distribution amongst the IDPs in Vavuniya", he said.
