Northern road development in full swing

Economic activities and people to people contact between the North and the South will propel with the development of the road network in the Northern Province after 30 years.

The Road Development Authority (RDA) has used its fullest potential to achieve road development targets in the province soon. According to RDA General Manager R.W. Ramjet Prefacer, the reconstruction of Mannar - Pooneryn road is in progress with the participation of 17 contractors and each contractor should complete a stretch of kilometer within three months.

The Government has allocated Rs. 500 million for this 85 kilometer road development project supervised by the RDA. He said the Army with technical assistance from the RDA is in the process of reconstructing the A35 and A34 highways while three main bridges are also being constructed in the province.

Sangupiddi bridge connecting the Jaffna peninsular with the mainland and Arippu bridge in the Mannar district are also being constructed by the Authority, he said.

He said the Navy is also involved in widening and developing the Puttalam-Mannar road.

"The construction of access road to Madhu Church is progressing," he said. The RDA has also focused on the reconstruction and development of the A9 highway and feasibility study are being conducted by the officials. This 200 km road development project is estimated to cost Rs. 100,000 million.
